What comes to your mind when you think of the word worship?
Does going to a church service come to mind? Does a favorite hymn or a modern-day praise song? Does reading and receiving a teaching on a Scripture passage, or a liturgical reading, come to mind? Does bowing your head in solemn prayer or lifting your hands in praise? Does giving your tithe or taking communion come to mind?
What is worship to you? To me? What we really need to ask and understand – and live out – is: What is worship to our God? What kind of worship from us is meaningful to our Lord? After all, it is our Lord who is receiving our worship.
Worship the LORD with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs.
Our Lord is the One True God, Creator, Life-Giver, Sovereign, Eternal, Holy, Perfect, Provider, Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. Our Lord is our Help, Healer, Hope, Shepherd and Savior. Our Lord is the Way and the Truth and the Life. Our Lord is Love. Our Lord cannot be put into a box or on a shelf where we can pull Him out once a week – or even two or three times each week – to worship Him.
Our Lord broke through all barriers and boundaries of time and space; He broke through all of our limited abilities to comprehend what is incomprehensible: That our Holy God entered into our time and space to reveal His love for us – His outrageous, all encompassing, saving, transforming love. Our Lord shatters all concepts of what love is. Jesus Christ is absolutely radical, passionate, persistent, self-sacrificing and death-conquering in His love for us!
Oh! May our eyes, hearts, minds and spirits respond to our Lord’s love in such a way that we will worship Him as He desires and deserves! Jesus told us what our Heavenly Father truly desires from His children as we worship Him:
…a time is coming, and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.
God is spirit, and His worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.
As we worship our Lord in spirit and in truth, we will be moved to love Him and love those around us by choosing to:
Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed.
Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.
So, come, and worship the Lord! And sing with your whole life as you live for Him!
Worship the Lord with gladness; come before Him with joyful songs.
