TAKE A WALK FOR LIFE!

When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. And after he became the father of Methuselah. Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enoch lived 365 years. Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away. – Genesis 5:21-24

By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before Enoch was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. – Hebrews 11:5-6

Enoch walked with God. Such a simple statement. Such an amazing and powerful statement to be said about anyone. Even more incomprehensible to my mind is that our holy, almighty and sovereign God makes Himself intimately available to us and wants to walk with us.

What was going on with Enoch that he became known for walking with God? We don’t know a great deal of details about Enoch but, in these couple of Scripture passages, much can be gleaned. Personally, I wonder if Enoch may have experienced some deep turning point of faith when he became a daddy to Methuselah since the Scripture reads: “…after he became the father of Methuselah. He walked with God for 300 years…” Something life changing, perspective changing and priority changing may have happened to Enoch at the birth of his child. Maybe some awakening of awe and thankfulness for the gift of life he saw so clearly, and held so closely, in his newborn baby. Maybe some powerful pull on his mind and soul made Enoch realize that the Giver of Life was near and wanted to walk with him as His child.

Enoch walked with God. He sought God earnestly. And God was found because God is always near, and is found by all who earnestly seek Him. Enoch wanted to be in intimate relationship with God, to walk with Him, to share his life with Him. This wasn’t just a short-lived emotional response that moved Enoch to seek and walk intimately with God only for a little while, as so often accompanies a life-changing event – whether that is a birth or a death or any other human experience in between these two extremes. No. Enoch was moved by an earnest faith that acknowledges the truth of God as the Giver of Life and as the God who is Ever Present with us. Enoch grabbed hold of God’s hand to take a walk with Him, and he didn’t let go. And God never let go of Enoch. God and Enoch took a walk for life.

God is always faithful. God is always near. God wants to walk with you. God will intimately keep walking with you throughout every experience and every moment of your life. God will, and wants to, walk with you everyday of your life and lead you to live a life of eternal purpose, deep meaning, unexpected adventure, full hope and unfailing love. When you choose to walk, and keep walking, with God, you live a life like nothing you could even begin to imagine! Reach out in faith. Seek God earnestly. Let go of anything and everything else that may be holding you back. Take hold of God’s holy, loving hand and take a walk for life!
